Fence and Block Wall Contractors in Ivins, UT: The Rules Ivins Adds

Ivins writes more design rules into its fence and wall code than its neighbors do. Beyond height limits, it regulates front courtyard walls, block color along its main streets, and which materials are allowed at all. Anyone quoting a fence or wall in Ivins should know these; this page summarizes Ivins City Code §16.11.135 and §16.11.136 as read on September 26, 2026.

Ivins fence and wall rules at a glance

• 6 feet on side and rear lines

  Measured from finish grade, outside the front setback area (§16.11.135(2)(a)).

• 3 feet 6 inches in the front setback

  And at least 1 foot back from the property line, curb, or sidewalk so landscaping can soften the fence (§16.11.135(2)(b)).

• Corner lots

  3 feet 6 inches in front and street-side setbacks and in the 30-foot corner triangle; an open fence such as chain-link or wrought iron may reach 5 feet in a street-facing setback (§16.11.135(3)).

• Different grades between lots

  On a shared line, 6 feet above grade on either side unless both owners agree in writing; a fence on a retaining wall against a cut may total 9 feet (§16.11.135(2)(c)).

• Block color on arterial streets

  CMU colored "Sandstone" (or "Geneva" on Old Highway 91), with a split-face row beneath the cap, along named arterial and collector streets (§16.11.135).

• Materials not allowed

  Used materials, corrugated metal, plywood, wood pallets, lightweight trellis, and bright colored plastic other than white, among others (§16.11.135).

Front courtyard walls

A courtyard wall encloses an open-air patio in the front yard. Ivins allows them, with conditions: they must sit at least 10 feet behind the back of the sidewalk (7 feet 6 inches in gated developments), at least 5 feet from the side property line, and front-facing courtyard walls 10 to 15 feet from the front property line are limited to 4 feet 6 inches, with side-facing walls 15 feet or more back limited to 5 feet 6 inches. Gates may be up to 6 feet 6 inches. A building permit with a plot plan and elevations is required.

Retaining walls in Ivins

• A retaining wall over 4 feet may not have its exposed face toward a public or private street, unless it is hidden by a building, structure, or fencing.
• Walls over 4 feet must be terraced, with at least a 3-foot offset face to face.
• Within 10 feet of a development's boundary, a wall over 4 feet above existing grade needs the adjacent owner's written approval.
• Walls must be built or finished to blend with the surrounding landscape colors.
