- Confirm insurance directly with the insurer or agent, and ask for a certificate.

- Look at completed work, ideally a few years old, and ask for references you can call.
- Compare warranties in writing, covering workmanship and materials separately.
- Check specialty fit. A company that mostly does chain-link may not be the right pick for a reinforced block retaining wall, and a masonry company may not do wood privacy fences. Ask.
